Born in Beijing, Su Xiao Ming joined Chinese Navy in 1975 as a singer for the Navy Song & Dance Troupe. In 1980, "Night at the Naval Base" (军港之夜）made her a household name in China, mainly because of her "pop" singing style, which was rare, if not controversial at that time. In 1985, she left China for France to study music. In 1995, she returned to China as a French citizen and has appeared on many Chinese TV shows.
