Alex was born in the old Russian town of Smolensk. With his parents working around Russia and abroad, Alex travelled a lot with them, including several years in East Germany. In 1989 he moved to Moscow. In 1993 he became interested in avant-garde fashion and in 1996 "PTUCH" magazine awarded Alex as the best avant-garde designer - receiving their "Golden Ptuch" prize.
