McAuley, who grew up in Belfast, is best known as the piano player in Them, who relocated to LA without Van Morrison in 1967. Upon Them's demise, he formed Belfast Gypsies with his brother Pat (they also released a 45 under the name Freaks Of Nature) and he later moved to Dublin and formed a band called Cult, with Brendan Bonass and Paul Brady (who was later in Planxty).
