From the liner notes for Putumayo Records' Mali: "Raised in a family of farmers, Diakité started humming to herself in secret when she was about 12, accompanying herself on a dried gourd used as percussion. Her trademark music style is wassoulou, named after the remote region in southern Mali where it originates.
