Inspired by the success of hip-hop and rap, Shadz 'O' Blak, along with other young Kenyan bands, began to look at their own culture in the mid-'90s. Led by singers Fyonna and Laura, Shadz 'O' Blak attracted international attention as one of the bands appearing on the groundbreaking Todd Josiah-produced compilation album, Kenyan: the First Chapter in 1997.
