Sonny started his musical career on guitar. He took 2 years of lessons from Skip Westphal. Westphal, from Aurora, is a classically trained guitarist, who stressed the importance of playing without a pick. Sonny added bass to his repertoire in 1985 and played in a few bands in the Cleveland area. Most notable of those bands were The Janglers and Al's Fast Freight.
