Suzanne de St. Aubin was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where she grew up. After finishing high school, she spent eleven years in Switzerland and France, first as a student and then working in the Swiss watch industry. She returned to the U.S. in 1977, and eventually moved to an island in Puget Sound, Washington State, where she lives with her husband and many animal friends.
