The Cubby Creatures were born out of San Francisco's Mission District in 1997, becoming the musical arm of a cult-like art group called the Cubby, which is also the name of the group’s guiding principle / higher power. Jol and Brian formed the group with Emily on violin, Karl on clarinet, and Matt on drums. Matt quickly left the group and was replaced by Jason.
