Between 1996 and 1998, Minneapolis-based psychedelic improv unit Salamander was effectively out of commission. Sean Connaughty and Erik Wivinus, two of the musicians behind the collective, kept their 4-track recorders humming with assorted side projects. While Wivinus occupied himself with Gentle Tasaday, Connaughty and former co-worker Wes Morden formed Vortex Navigation Company.
