İlkin Deniz was born in Trabzon in 1961. He grew up in Istanbul. He started playing mandolin and accordion in his childhood. When he was a high school student, Deniz first became interested in playing bass upon hearing records of Jaco Pastorius, Scott LaFaro, Charlie Haden, Ray Brown, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker. He took bass classes from Cem Aksel and Tahsin Endersoy.
