For Sentimental Reasons Lyrics & Chords By The Widow's Bane

LyricsView Chords

She threw the first handful into the grave.
She called forth her tears; she knew how behave,
Not revealing the secret that she held inside.
And they all felt such pity for my poor widowed bride.

I could not condemn them for, some years ago,
When the hot winds of passion through my own loins did blow,
I drank her deception and it quenched my thirst,
Darkness hidden in beauty like a fine redwood hearse.

Now she has lain me down to sleep,
And never shall I rise.
The serpent's nurse with bitten hand
Should come as no surprise.

Now she lies with another, held tight in embrace,
As I lie in this casket in this unholy place.
My dead heart is throbbing, with vengeance its beat.
And I climb, with a cold smile to my wife I shall meet.

The cold wind is bitter and the clouds hide the moon.
I pass by the village, my time coming soon.
I look through my window, in my bed they are warm.
But they both start to shiver from the strength of my scorn.

And I will lay her down to sleep,
And never will she rise.
The dying nurse will crush the snake,
Brought forth her own demise.

I go out to the barn and I get my old scythe.
My milk cow is lean, left to starve by my wife.
My oxen are haggard and my silo is bare.
I move back to the house, my wife has not a prayer.

I cross through the threshold, catch the smell of their lust.
Then I pull them apart and the blade I do thrust
Through his stomach so deeply, and the wood that's below.
This he could not dislodge; death will come, but be slow.

I catch my wife quickly, even though she has run.
All her days in the parlor while I worked in the sun,
Too much candy and gossip will make a girl weak.
And as I dragged her behind, she was too scared to speak.

I said, "I loved you and worked hard to give you a life,
And you bled my heart empty as a thanks for my strife.
So you could have your lover and the money I bore,
But there's room in this casket for our love evermore."

Now we both lay down to sleep,
And never shall we rise.
With dirt packed on, there was no one
To hear her muffled cries.
